"PERMISSIVE PARENTING… OR, SHAME ON J.C. PENNEY!"
by Mark Pugh

There are two kinds of parenting that have been proven to fail. One is authoritarian parenting and the other is permissive parenting. Most permissive parents don't need the help of major corporations, but they are getting it this fall from J.C. Penney. Have you seen their back to school advertisement? The teenage girl is getting ready for school. She is wearing a pair of jeans and top that show a lot of midriff. Her mother stops her by saying, "You're not going to school looking like that!" Then the mother goes over and lowers the jeans in order to show more midriff.
Is something wrong with this picture??? I am not some "stick in the mud fuddy-duddy." I think I am pretty open-minded and attuned to what kids like these days, having two teenagers of my own. But the brazen script of this commercial stunned me. Even if I were not concerned as a parent or preacher with the moral implications of the ad's message, I would be very bothered. I know the problems that our school systems are facing because of the provocative nature of today's fashions.
Many school systems ban the kind of attire encouraged by this commercial, not on moral grounds, but because it so distracts from the educational process. But, the real problem is not J.C. Penney, or even the teenagers who wear provocative clothes. The real problem is parents who don't parent.

PERCEPTIONS
"A Rising Tide"
by Joel Mark Solliday
Do you ever feel envious when someone else succeeds? Of course we aren't going to admit that we do - at least not out loud. It is a common human failing to think that another's success diminishes our own. If you think that perception through from a logical perspective, it has no validity in fact. In his article, "A Rising Tide," Joel Mark Solliday shows why. You can read it
