THE ENCOURAGEMENT BUSINESS

by Mark Pugh

I like to say that "Christians need to be in the encouragement business, because the world is in the discouragement business." Think about it. How many times have you received brusque, rude, or impolite treatment, just because someone felt like treating you that way? Often!

Once in a while, when you are treated with kindness and respect, you are made to think, "Is that person a Christian too?" Sadly, Christians can be the very ones who are in the discouragement business. It breaks my heart every time I hear of a Christian who has discouraged someone by their words or demeanor.

Hebrews 3:13 tells us to "encourage one another daily." I don't know about you, but a daily dose of encouragement goes a long way toward keeping me pointed in the right direction. I also realize my responsibility to be a dispenser of encouragement, not merely a recipient. When was the last time you wrote someone an encouragement card? When was the last time you called or visited someone with a word of encouragement? Let's all strive to be a part of the solution by encouraging someone every day!
