Perceptions #42

"AFRAID OF STRENGTHS"

by Charles Hodge

It is true. . . men are afraid of their vices---temper, whiskey, overeating, etc. But it is equally true that men are afraid of their talents! The "one talent man" hid his. Many talented men reject promotions, reject jobs of responsibility, and reject leadership roles. Many who would be great workers in the church sit on the sidelines. They are afraid of their strengths! This is evident in many ways in the church.

1. We are afraid of men who think! We like a Bible class of familiar comments with no challenge or disagreements. True, some are disruptive in class-but is thinking encouraged? Is a thinker usually put down or run off? Many men who can think are never heard in church.

2. We are afraid of men with money! It is true that money often rules. But is it not also true that money is unconsciously rejected? Many wealthy men go elsewhere. There is resentment and jealousy.

3. We are afraid of men of action! Men, who constantly press for decisions, changes and good works are dangerous. They are fought and crucified. They rock the boat.

4. We are afraid of youth! Youth are allowed to do so little in church. Yet Six Flags makes millions of dollars with energetic, talented youth. So far as I know they haven't taken over the Six Flags management.

5. We are afraid of big men! Great men of character, vision, kindness, wisdom and patience are "cut down" by little petty men running the church their way. Why must we be afraid of our strengths? When little men cast long shadows, it is nearly sunset.
